According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the annual mean wage for Licensed Practical Nurses in Florida is $57,140, and the hourly mean wage is $27.47. Starting or entry-level salaries are likely to be lower than the mean wage. Salaries may vary depending on employer, location, and experience.
Will I have my Practical Nurse license after graduating?
Graduating does not automatically grant licensure. You must pass the NCLEX-PN® and meet Florida Board of Nursing requirements to become a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN). The Practical Nursing program at FVI is designed to give you the knowledge and skills you need to be ready for the exam.
How long does it take to get licensed after graduation?
After program completion, transcripts are submitted to the Florida Board of Nursing. This process may take up to 60 days, followed by the Board’s processing time. Most graduates sit for the NCLEX-PN within a few weeks to a few months.
Can I transfer my Practical Nurse license to other states?
Florida issues LPN licenses, but nursing licensure is state-specific. If you relocate, you may need to apply for reciprocity or endorsement in your new state. Always check with the state’s board of nursing for requirements.
What advancement opportunities exist for LPNs?
Working as a Licensed Practical Nurse is often the first step in a long and rewarding nursing career. Many LPNs gain experience in hospitals, long-term care, or home health and then choose to advance into roles with greater responsibility. One common pathway is to continue education and become a Registered Nurse (RN) by enrolling in an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program. These degrees expand both the scope of practice and earning potential.
Other LPNs pursue specialization in areas such as pediatrics, geriatrics, hospice care, mental health, or home health nursing, often building on skills first developed in their practical nursing program. Over time, LPNs may also transition into leadership roles such as charge nurse, clinical supervisor, or healthcare educator. FVI’s Career Services team provides guidance on advancement options, helping LPNs explore opportunities that align with their career goals.
What is the difference between an LPN and an RN?
LPNs provide basic nursing care under the supervision of RNs or physicians, focusing on bedside care, medication administration, and patient comfort. RNs complete more advanced education (ASN or BSN), have a broader scope of practice, and may take on leadership, critical care, or specialized roles.
Is the Practical Nursing program taught in English and Spanish?
No. The program is taught in English only at both of our campuses: Miramar and Miami.
