Online Medical Assistant Program Curriculum

FVI’s medical assistant program in South Florida is designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in outpatient care. Through a combination of live online instruction, hybrid coursework, and in-person hands-on training at our Miramar campus, you’ll develop the clinical and administrative skills needed to thrive in today’s healthcare settings.

In just 36 instructional weeks, this diploma program equips you with the foundational knowledge to support physicians during physical exams, minor procedures, and diagnostic testing such as phlebotomy and EKGs. You’ll also gain proficiency in front-office responsibilities, including patient scheduling, intake, and maintaining electronic health records.

Students receive in-service training and CPR certification as part of the curriculum. Upon completion, you’ll be eligible for multiple certification exams and prepared for roles such as medical assistant, EKG technician, or phlebotomy technician.

This program prepares you to sit for the following certifications (exam costs not included):

Online Medical Assistant School Prerequisites & Admission Requirements

To enroll in FVI’s medical assistant school in Miramar, students must meet the following admission requirements. Applications are accepted year-round, but space is limited—so we recommend applying early to secure your spot. Our Admissions Counselors are here to guide you through each step.

01 Age Requirements

Applicants must be at least 17 years old.

02 Education

A high school diploma or recognized equivalent is required. If your education was completed outside the U.S., you’ll need to submit an official English translation of your academic records along with a credential evaluation from a NACES-approved agency.

03 Admissions Interview

All applicants must complete an admissions interview, either in person or virtually.

04 Identification

You’ll need to provide a valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, state ID, or passport.

05 Local Residency

This program includes mandatory in-person components. Students must live in or near Miramar and be able to attend required on-campus classes.

06 Health & Safety Requirements

Before participating in your externship, you may need to meet immunization requirements such as PPD testing or proof of COVID-19 and flu vaccination, depending on the policies of the clinical site. These guidelines follow CDC recommendations for healthcare workers.

Certifications are issued through NAHP (National Association of Health Professionals). At the end of the program students are eligible to apply for the following Registration/Certification Exams.

An externship is a supervised training experience that takes place at an actual healthcare facility. At FVI, all Medical Assistant students complete a 180-hour externship during the final six weeks of the program to apply their skills in a real-world setting.

Are CCMAs the same as CNAs or RMAs?

No, they are different roles with unique responsibilities and certification paths.

A CCMA (Certified Clinical Medical Assistant) is trained in both clinical and administrative tasks and typically works in outpatient and medical office settings.
A CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant) provides hands-on patient care under the supervision of nursing staff, often in long-term care or hospital environments.
An RMA (Registered Medical Assistant) performs similar duties to a CCMA but is certified through a different credentialing organization.
